H.R. Giger Necronomicon: The Book That Birthed Alien
In 1977, a Swiss airbrush artist named H.R. Giger released a dark masterpiece that would change cinema forever. This book was Necronomicon. It introduced the world to biomechanical art. It blends cold, industrial machinery with sleek organic anatomy.
Today, we are thrilled to share a pristine digital archive of the rare 1977 Edition C Zürich printing with our community.
Before you dive into the interactive flipbook below, let’s explore the incredible story of how this legendary book was born.
How the Necronomicon Started: Lovecraft and Nightmares
Giger felt a deep connection to this concept. As a child in Switzerland, he suffered from intense night terrors. He began painting his nightmares as a form of therapy. The airbrush became his tool of choice. It allowed him to paint smooth, flesh-like metal textures that looked disturbingly alive.
By the mid-1970s, Giger had compiled nearly 200 of these surreal, haunting drawings and paintings. He decided to publish them under Lovecraft’s infamous title.

The Hollywood Breakthrough: Meeting Ridley Scott
The HR Giger Necronomicon is not just an art collection. It is the literal blueprint for modern science fiction.
In 1977, director Ridley Scott was in London. He was trying to figure out the visual style for a new movie called Alien. The script was ready, but the production team could not design a monster that felt truly terrifying.
Writer Dan O’Bannon handed Ridley Scott a freshly printed copy of Giger’s Necronomicon. Scott was instantly mesmerized.
Years later, Ridley Scott recalled the exact moment he flipped open the book. He stopped at a specific 1976 painting titled Necronom IV. The painting featured a sleek, elongated creature with a translucent skull.
Scott instantly said: This is it. We don’t need to look any further. This is our monster.

Designing the Future of Sci-Fi Horror
Twentieth Century Fox was initially hesitant to hire Giger. They worried his art was too dark and disturbing for general theater audiences. However, Ridley Scott fought for him.
Giger was flown out to Shepperton Studios in England. Using the paintings from Necronomicon as his exact reference guide, he hand-sculpted the iconic Xenomorph suit. He also designed the massive, fossilized Space Jockey pilot and the haunting, ribbed corridors of the derelict spaceship.
Giger’s work on Alien went on to win an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects in 1980. It all started with the pages of this single book.
