We have some incredibly heavy news to share with the APFanszone community today. Legendary voice actor Peter Cullen passed away peacefully at the age of 85 on 26th August 2026, surrounded by his family at his home in Los Angeles.
While mainstream pop culture knows him best as the noble leader of the Autobots, Optimus Prime, or the gentle sighs of Eeyore, the sci-fi horror community owes him an eternal debt. Cullen was the literal throat behind the terrifying, guttural clicking and growling vocal effects of the original creature in John McTiernan’s 1987 masterpiece, Predator.
The Horseshoe Crab: Birth of the Yautja Sound
The story behind how Cullen created the Predator’s voice is a masterclass in voice-acting ingenuity. The studio initially wanted a standard, booming monster roar.
