Happy 2nd Birthday, Alien: Romulus! Where Do Rain, Andy, and the Sequel Stand?
Can you believe it’s already been two full years? On August 16, 2024, director Fede Álvarez officially brought the Xenomorph back to its pure horror roots with the theatrical premiere of Alien: Romulus.
Grossing over $350 million worldwide, Romulus successfully bridged the gap between Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986). It injected a massive dose of face-hugging adrenaline into the franchise, giving us incredible practical effects, the terrifying Offspring, and a standout synthetic-human dynamic.

Rumor Control: Is the Alien Romulus Sequel Canceled?
If you have been browsing the web over the last few weeks, you probably saw viral reports claiming that the highly anticipated Alien Romulus sequel was “indefinitely shelved”. The rumors alleged a massive behind-the-scenes script battle between Ridley Scott and Fede Álvarez over bringing back Michael Fassbender’s android character, David, from Prometheus.
The Facts: The project is NOT canceled! 20th Century Studios President Steve Asbell personally stepped in to shut down the cancellation rumors with a blunt, one-word response: “Nope.”
What We Know About the Next Chapter
While the project is alive and kicking, there are some major shifts happening behind the screen:
- The Creative Team: Fede Álvarez and Rodo Sayagues have written the script. Álvarez is stepping back from the director’s chair but will remain heavily involved as a producer.
- The Cast: The story is expected to directly continue the journey of the first film’s breakout survivors—Rain (Cailee Spaeny) and Andy (David Jonsson).
- The Timeline: The studio is currently looking to secure a new director to helm the ship, aiming for a potential release window around 2027.
The Next Xenomorph Inbound: Alien: Earth
While we wait for Rain and Andy’s pod to open, fans won’t have to wait long for fresh acid blood. Noah Hawley’s upcoming FX on Hulu prequel series, Alien: Earth, is locked and loaded as the next major entry in the franchise.
